Turning Green

Sustainable & Organic Woodworking

Turning Green is best known for natural wooden frames made using sustainable lumber and reclaimed city trees. And our commitment to green goes deeper than just our name. The concept of our designs, our woodworking practices, and our business mindset all focus on organic and recycling themes:
-Our main source for wood is Horigan Urban Forest Products - a family operated business, which mills and kiln dries Chicago area trees that come down for reasons such as storms, bugs, or disease.
-The concept of our designs originates with nature itself, and our goal is to make functional wooden art while accenting the unique and individual beauty of each tree. True to nature, our work uses the tree’s bark, coloring, knots, worm scars, and/or moss as a focal point, making our work organic in form as well as in its origin.
-Using all these elements of the tree enable us to reduce our waste, an important aspect of green friendly woodworking. In addition, our solid wood backings decrease scrap, and our frames are finished with Tried and True natural linseed oil, which we chose for it’s lack of fumes and for being environmentally safe.
-Our business practices are also centered around reuse. We use recycled paper & shipping materials (*Special thanks to Edenside Gallery for recycling your packing peanuts w/ us! )

While Turning Green welcomes custom orders, we are mostly known for our Natural Picture Frames, which can be ordered from us or are available at a variety of shops and galleries.
